Shadow's First Halloween
Shadow lifted her head as she heard several voices. “Trick or Treat” was heard from all around, as the voices kept repeating the words, she glanced around. She stepped forward to try and figure out where the voices were coming from. Her wings folded tightly against her sides, she headed towards an area where she felt they were coming from. She stopped in her tracks and snorted, eyes wide as she glanced at something sitting on the ground glowing. She lowered her head, sniffing the item, she went to take a bite of the weird object as she heard “Don’t eat that.” She stopped mere inches from the object. “What is it?” She asked, tilting her head. “That is called a jack-o-lantern, a carved pumpkin with a light source inside it. It is a tradition that has been done for as long as I can remember” the voice said. She looked around trying to find the voice only to see her friend and herd mate, Barracuda, standing nearby. “Barra, why is ‘trick or treat’ being said everywhere?” she asked him, while still listening to everything going on around her. As she waited for an answer from Barracuda, she saw something white dart past. She flared her wings and backed up a few steps in fright. “What was that?” She cried out. Barracuda had seen the equine hidden in a sheet, he suspected the equine had dressed up as a ghost. “That was just one of the many who have dressed up for Halloween.” he said as he stepped beside her. He nuzzled his friend and herd mate, “you’re ok Shadow. It’s just part of the tradition.” He said as he lowered his voice to try and calm the mare. Shadow snorted but slowly calmed down, her wings again resting against her side. “Am I allowed to dress up?” She wondered out loud. She began to walk towards her home, thinking about what all she had learned. It was still quite early, the sun hadn’t even set yet. She hurried to find something to dress up as. She felt like she needed something that would cause others to speak about it for a long time. After Shadow had walked off, Barracuda had chuckled. He remembered when he had been like Shadow, excited for the holiday but also scatter brained and not knowing what to do. He decided that he could give Shadow a bit of help and figured he would wear his old war horse gear, something he made when he was still dressing up on Halloween. He allowed his magic to flow and hide his horns. His armor never set well on his head with his horns showing. He snorted and flicked his tail. He trotted off in search of Shadow. Meanwhile, Shadow had tossed almost every idea out. She decided that she would go as a Shaman. Something she had only heard about. She hid her wings but left her horns visible. She felt better after doing so. She heard the sound of hooves coming towards her and looked up to see Barracuda in full armour. “Where in the world did you find all that?” She asked in wonder. She walked around him and took a closer look at all the stuff he had on. She giggled as she noticed that the armour was a little rusty in areas. “This is an old outfit, and I rather like how it looks.” Barr stated. He tossed his head, making the metal clang. “Are you ready for your first trick or treating adventure?” Barr asked. “Of course I am. I want to know what all this is about.” she said. “Oh make sure to grab something to put your treats in, as they are handed out.” Barr said as he showed off his bucket. Shadow looked at him and mumbled something that sounded like ‘acting like a foal’. She turned around and looked at the different things she could use. She then remembered that her outfit had a few pouches. After both horses had their outfits and buckets, or in Shadow’s case pouches, they headed off. The first place they ventured to is to a lovely older mare, as they approached, they noticed several others. They both waited their turn. Shadow took in all the different outfits, she would later learn they are called ‘costumes’, something she wondered if this was the only time of the year that allowed the weird combinations or if the outfits could be used all year long. As their turn got closer, she heard a lot of different ways of saying ‘trick or treat,’ the one she found the weirdest was ‘trick or treat, smell my feet.’ She wondered who in their right mind would smell someone’s feet. She had held back a snort when she heard that. Later that night, Shadow was ready to get out of her costume, she bid Barracuda a goodnight and went to her own little area. She removed the pouches with all the different treats she had gathered. She then removed all the other gear, her body sore from all the rubbing some parts of the outfit caused. She unveiled her wings and stretched her body. She decided that she would wait till the morning to go through her haul. The next morning, Shadow startled awake. She gave a groan as she saw Barr with his bucket. He set it down and tilted his head. “How did you sleep?” he asked, his horns now unveiled and in full view. “I had dreams about all the different costumes we saw last night.” She said with a huff. She was still sleepy and just wanted to stay in bed. “Well take this and give it a try. It’s called a ‘Sugar Cube.’” he stated before nudging one towards her. She took the treat and slowly chewed, she had never tasted anything so sweet. She didn’t know what to make of it, she had seen several get dropped in her pouches on their rounds, she just didn’t try anything. She had seen several other treats being handed out, her favorite was the lovely red apples. She pawed the ground as she finished the treat, “it’s sweet, a little too sweet for me.” she stated. “That’s because it’s nothing but sugar.” Barr said as he munched on a cube himself.
