Veilhorn Steed

At Home With You

Spring arrived in the valley like spilled paint across a white canvas. Meadows unfurled in ribbons of lavender and buttercup yellow, rivers carried petals on the waves instead of leaves, the trees bowed low beneath clouds of pink blossoms, and the scent of spring in the air.

Carmen darted through the wildflower fields like a spark of sunlight. Her coat shimmered golden beneath the morning light, and petals swirled behind her in tiny whirlwinds. Aurora followed several paces behind. The taller mare carried herself with calm strength, her black coat warmed up by the spring sun. Though she appeared composed, her red eyes never strayed far from Carmen.

“Slow down, baby,” she called gently.

Carmen only laughed, turning her head back towards her girlfriend but never stopping. “If I slow down, spring might end before I get to see it all!”

Aurora shook her head fondly and continued after her. They had spent years together wandering the valley, but Carmen still greeted every season as though it were brand new. Aurora loved that about her, the brightness, the impossible energy and the way she could turn even the most ordinary days into celebrations.

Ahead, Carmen skidded to a halt in a clearing overflowing with flowers. Bluebells blanketed the earth, while white lilies leaned beside patches of scarlet poppies. Sunlight filtered through blooming branches overhead, casting soft colours across the grass.

“This is perfect!” Carmen declared.

“For what?”

She grinned. “Flower crowns, obviously.”

Aurora smiled despite herself. “Obviously.”

Carmen immediately gathered bunches of blossoms, dropping them beside a mossy stone. Aurora settled next to her, folding her legs gracefully beneath her. Around them, bees drifted lazily through the flowers while butterflies flickered like living petals. Insects also coming to life with the warmer weather.

Carmen worked quickly, weaving stems together with practiced ease. She hummed softly as she braided daisies and violets into a bright, uneven circle.

Aurora watched her with quiet amusement. “You’re making that too large.”

“It’s dramatic, it’s supposed to be like that,” Carmen corrected, white pushing another branch of flowers into the braided circle.

“It’s falling apart, love…”

“That’s part of the charm!” Carmen argued, pushing a pile of branches and flowers closer to Aurora. “You need to make one too.”

Aurora laughed under her breath and began crafting one of her own. Her movements were slower and more careful. Weaving pale jasmine with strands of lavender until the flowers formed a delicate ring. A moment of softness nobody but Carmen got to see from her.

Carmen leaned closer, eyes wide. “Yours always look enchanted.”

“You say that every year.”

“Because it’s true every year!”

Aurora placed the finished crown gently atop Carmen’s head. Combing her mane to the side and kissing her forehead before looking at her. The cool-coloured flowers looked radiant against Carmen’s warmer coat.

“There,” Aurora said softly. “Now you look like spring itself.”

Carmen’s expression softened for a moment before she nudged Aurora playfully. “Your turn.”

She set her own lopsided crown onto Aurora’s head. Gently trying to pry it over her horns, and when it finally slipped over, the whole thing ended up around her neck instead.

Carmen burst into laughter. “It’s too big!”

Aurora tried to remain dignified for exactly three seconds before laughing too. The sound carried through the clearing. Making the moment feel just a bit more precious.

Afterward, Carmen sprang back to her hooves. “Come on!”

Before Aurora could ask where they were going, Carmen raced into the drifting sea of petals beyond the trees. She sighed fondly and followed.

The orchard beyond the clearing had fully bloomed overnight. Pale pink petals floated endlessly through the air, spinning around the veilhorns like snowfall touched by sunset. Carmen leaped through them joyfully, dancing between the trees and chasing petals through the air.

Aurora slowed, watching her carefully. Even though the moment felt just perfect, Aurora was always on edge. Ears flicking at every sound, she never stopped thinking about dangers, especially where Carmen was concerned.

Carmen noticed her hesitation and trotted back through the petals. “You’re worrying again.”

Aurora looked away slightly. “Someone has to.”

“Aurora,” Carmen stepped closer until their muzzles touched slightly. “You know what I think?”

“What?”

“I think spring feels so beautiful because I get to share it with you.”

Aurora’s protective walls melted instantly whenever Carmen spoke like that.

Carmen smiled gently. “You don’t always have to guard me from the world. Sometimes you can just enjoy it beside me, love.”

For a long moment, Aurora said nothing. Then finally, nodded.

Together they wandered deeper into the orchard, coming to a halt by a small garden just in time as the sun began to set. Aurora laid down, nudging Carmen who curled up beside her. Letting Aurora wrap her body around the smaller mare.

As sunset painted the sky gold and lavender, Carmen rested against Aurora’s body. Head nuzzled in her fur as Aurora held her. “I love you, you know that right?” Carmen mumbled, eyes closed as she enjoyed the warmth of her lover.

“I do,” Aurora nodded. “I love you too, baby.”

Surrounded by blooming petals, flower crowns and the endless colours of spring, the two veilhorns looked perfectly at home together.
