Veilhorn Steed

Investigating the Human Realms

On a cold and dreary night, days before All Hallows Eve, Shadow had traveled through the rifts. Her magic pulsating, her body rippling. She stepped out from the rift, making sure to hide her horns and wings. She felt safer this way. She trotted off in search of the one thing she came here for. Something to show the other Veilhorns that humans were not to be feared. She moved along a path, taking everything in. She was hoping to come across a settlement; a place to stay for a short period of time. Soon, she stumbled upon a building; tired and hungry, she moved towards it. Hoping with everything, whoever was here was kind and gentle. She walked through the back of the building taking in the scents, she smelled others near; what she could only assume was equines. From everything she had heard of the human realm, she knew these equines were magicless creatures, relying solely on their natural beauty to survive. Nearby, she heard a few nickers and whinnies. She stopped as she glanced around, she was shocked to see a few equines. A stallion and a mare stood nearby. She turned to try and get a better look at them. She stood back, watching; she was really intrigued by the mare, the coat a bright red, almost shimmer like. She tilted her head, trying to see if the mare was veiled, one of the traits of her species; Veilhorns were able to hide their magical abilities, appearing like a natural equine. She got the courage to move, walking towards the two. She waited to see if they noticed her at all. “Hello.” She said the moment she got close. She looked the stallion over, she noticed the stallion appeared to be blind. “My name is Shadow, I am new. Was wandering through forrest and came upon this place.” She stated. Dream looked up from her snack, flicking her tail. Her bright red body gleaming in the sun. “Welcome, Shadow, my name is Flaming Dreams but please call me Dream. And this handsome stallion next to me is Thundering Dream, but he prefers to be called Thunder.” She said, her voice gentle. Dreams' eyes shone as she nuzzled the stallion. “Thunder, we have a new friend.” She said gently. Turning back to Shadow, “Thunder here was struck by lightning when he was young, he is blind, but don’t let that fool you, he is a feisty stallion.” She giggled before going back to her snack. Thunder tilted his ears towards the two mares. His body twitching, a fly landing on his shoulder. “Hello” he said as he stepped forward, his muzzle reaching out to touch the new mare. Shadow stepped forward to allow the stallion to touch her, she had been told when she was younger, ‘a blind animal does better with feeling than they can with their sense of smell.’ She leaned into the stallion's touch, her body relaxing, being in a new realm made her nerves go on overdrive. A few hours later, the three of them were dozing under the shade of a weeping willow. She raised her head as she heard a whistle, glancing at Dream and Thunder, she wondered what was going on. Dream raised her head and whinnied, her human was there to bring her in. She nudged Thunder and began to trot to where the human stood. “Shadow, come. Join us for the night in the barn.” She called back. Shadow tilted her head before shaking her fear away. She trotted after her friends, deciding that she had nowhere else to stay. She slowly walked up to the others, looking the human over. Sniffing the air, she stopped a few feet away from the female human. The human was surprised to see another mare who belonged to no one she knew. Her eyes followed the mare as it approached her. She slowly raised her hand, “easy girl, I am not going to hurt you.” She whispered, her tone light. Shadow raised her eyed, eyes wide. She didn’t know this human, nor did she know their intent. She backed up several steps. Her body glinted in the sun. “No need to fear her Shadow, she is the one who takes care of us.” Dream said, already standing next to the human. She nuzzled the human, tossing her head towards the barn. She was signaling to the human, that they should leave the mare. The human sighed, her eyes lowering to the ground. ‘Fine, if this mare was going to be this way, then I will let her figure it out on her own.’ she mumbled under her breath. She turned and began to walk away. Shadow looked at the three of them walking away, her mind alight with everything going on, her ears perked as she heard the horses inside the barn being fed. Her hunger got the best of her, as she headed towards the barn. Her eyes flicking around, fear clearly shone. She stepped into the barn aisle glazing from left to right. She saw both Thunder and Dream towards the back left of the barn, she noticed that the doorway next to them was wide open. She stepped inside and sniffed around, while sniffing the human had shut the door. “There, now you will be safe for the night.” the human girl said, her eyes watching the mare. “There is a large mountain lion around that has been trying to hurt the horses around.” The human turned from the stall and headed out of the barn. She had other things to do and would be back the next morning to check on them. Shadow raised her head, hearing the lock click into place. She snorted and whinnied. “Why?” She asked, looking over at Dream and Thunder. Dream shook her head, “She will be back tomorrow morning to let us out.” She said as she went to her dinner. Thunder in the stall next to Dream huffed before laying down, his dinner untouched. The next morning, the human had snuck in and given the horses their breakfast before unlocking the stalls. She glanced at the new mare and smiled, she wondered if she would be able to touch the mare soon. She went about her work within the barn. She glanced out the doors and gave a light laugh, her family had decorated the yard with all types of halloween items. Standing just outside the doors was a Scarecrow. Shadow raised her head at the laugh, she ignored the food and headed out of the stall. She stretched before stopping next to the human. Her body is aching to get home. She decided to nuzzle the human before heading off. She would give the human a shock of her life. She slowly unveiled herself, her wings and horns coming into the world. She peeked at the human, before taking off in a trot. Her wings spread wide as she lifted into the air, vanishing into a rift, going home.
