Tejera's First Snow
It began as a little snowflake before being trailed by many. A light fall before becoming a downpour of sky flurries. Sky flurries had been a playful term coined by her mother as a foal whenever she told Tejera about snow. Bits of cloud that fell and shrouded the world in white for an entire season. The idea honestly baffled the mare and she had been worried she’d never get the chance to see it until now. It was as if the clouds were crying. Did clouds cry? The idea was a bit solemn to think about but that would soon be replaced by the everlasting curiosity that took over her as she watched the snowfall. The sky above was grey with huddled clouds and their breath brought a chill upon the land. The wind drifted through the air and made little strands of the mare’s mane dance until it had passed and the next draft came along. Luckily, Tejera’s winter coat had finally settled and its thickness allowed a seal of protection against the cold and the snow. Now that she thought about it, her own coat looked quite similar, a blanket of white, looking like freshly fallen snow over soil. Who knew the phenomena of the world could be so fascinating! Tejera found elements of the earth in just about anything and to see that even a small part of herself held some familiarity was encouraging. In the distance, the blue of the mountains provided a perfect contrast to the grey of the sky, painting the earth’s own natural canvas. Tejera had seen veilhorns that matched the landscape before her. Had they come from here and did it have to do with their frozen element? She remembered seeing an old veilhorn using their magic and the way it had unfolded fascinated her. It was almost a literal namesake as a veil of white had unfurled from the stallion’s horn before her eyes and proceeded to waltz through the air, almost looking like a personal aurora borealis that one could keep to themselves. His eyes a crystalline blue and the fire in them glowed like a frigid candle, vigorous as his own magic. Tejera had yet to see an aurora borealis in the flesh as well. Tejera’s own magic had been the element of air. It specifically had to do with elements of the wind but not as fantastical as whatever she had seen the elder harness. For a moment, the mare felt a sliver of jealousy. Some part of her had wished that she had been blessed with another element for her to weld and bend at will. Maybe she would finally be noticed by someone. Another breeze through her mane stifled her thoughts as the element to her own magic seemed to call her. The blood in her veins burned hot but not enough to completely singe her insides. If Tejera focused enough, she might even be able to feel the magic light her eyes. Some said that the sensation was an illusion but the mare liked to believe it happened if one solidified their own attention long enough. Perhaps she could put her magic to good use. Looking down upon the white beneath her, an idea slowly stirred in her mind and the sudden urge to paw at the snow was inevitable. Hoof digging in with a crunch, she created a small gulch with just one swift motion. Snow was quite flexible too! The cold shot up her leg and proceeded to give her a little shock, the mare nearly jumping up, a snort creating plumes in the air. Again, she repeated it and found out that if she used enough force, frozen particles would jump and tickle her right under her stomach. That time Tejera squealed as the cold shocked her once again, turning her curiosity into excitement. Snow was fascinating! The weather had turned her into a jovial filly at the touch of it and at any given moment her legs were ready to spring her body into the air. A laugh broke from her as she suspended herself in the air and kicked out her back legs to send powder flying. Like little fireworks inside of her, her bewilderment sparked and popped until she was bubbling with energy! The mare nearly hovered in her stride, neck and tail in an arch as she trotted. Suddenly, there was that one large spark that burst into flames and sent the mare into a full sprint, contributing another buck to the air. She couldn’t stop the giggles that shook her body in one jolly swirl of exhilaration. Oh she hadn’t felt like this in ages! Sure, seeing any form of magic could gauge that interest from her but something about this being so simplistic yet so unfamiliar was enough to have her glee spilling out in waves! In the time span of thirty minutes, Tejara hopped, ran, bucked, and did whatever she pleased in the frozen landscape. At one point, she even jumped and allowed herself to collide with the ground, cold stinging her back as she rolled onto it to look up at the snow-spotted sky that greeted her. As she gazed at it, a thought crept into her mind that threatened to sour the mood. A realization. Even though she was having fun exploring this new earthly element, she couldn’t help but think of how she only had herself to roam this. The land before her was vast and she wasn’t near any villages yet. She so desperately needed a friend. All of this traveling was beginning to get lonely… Usually, the mare didn’t mind being solitary but once in a while the thought occurred to her that she really had no one to share her discoveries with, causing her to deflate. Maybe in the next village, she would be lucky enough to stumble upon someone who shared the same interests as her. Letting out a sigh, the veilhorn blew a lock of hair that had fallen over her eyes out of the way. Slowly picking herself up, the snow clung to her coat, as if pleading with her not to go. Tejera shook herself to filter off the snow before she walked ahead. She still had a long way to go. Nonetheless, the distraction had been fun while it lasted.
