Appearance

Variegated only affects white patterns, by causing them to have small or medium holes or ticking scattered through the white or along the edges of the marking. The holes in the white will always be the same colour as the basecoat underneat the white, variegated will not cause dark spots or spotted patterns on its own, it can only cause holes in existing white markings.

Variegated holes/ticking should affect all white markings fairly equally, but it is allowed to have the spots or ticking concentrated around the edges of the white, as seen on the overo example below.

Variegated holes can be anywhere from as small as a tiny freckle to as large as the size of the hoof. It is allowed to have only small spots, or only large spots, or a mix of both.

If no white markings are present then variegated is not visible at all.

Affects mane/tail where it touches if the white pattern does - for example, roan does not affect mane/tail and therefor variegated has no effect on mane or tail either. Affects hooves and horns the same way normal white markings do - variegation spots cause a stripy appearance on hooves and horns where they touch.
