Genetics

Genotype options:

Flaxen is a recessive gene which means it requires two copies to show.

Flaxen only appears on chestnut-based coats (genos starting with ee); horses with black-based coats (Ee or EE) can carry flaxen but will not show it.

Appearance

Flaxen will lighten the mane and tail, anywhere from just slightly lighter than the body coat to a creamy white or pure white. Can be either a lighter version of the natural mane/tail, or a light cream/yellow.

The hair can either be a solid colour, or have a gradient "ombre" effect where the tips are much lighter than the roots, or where the roots are in the mane's natural colour.

Minimum requirement:

  • Lighten mane and tail from its natural colour, must be visibly lighter than the basecoat. The natural hair colour is allowed to optionally be visible at the roots.

Minimum requirements can be reduced or completely removed by the occlusion trait.

Allowed:

  • Can be anywhere between just slightly lighter to pure white.
  • Can be a lighter variation of the basecoat or a light cream yellow.
  • Can be a solid light colour throughout.
  • Can have a subtle ombre effect where the hair tips are lighter than the roots.

Not allowed:

  • Can not be darker than the natural hair colour
  • Can not have lighter roots than hair tips.

Eye colour:

Doesn't affect eye colour.

Skin colour:

Doesn't affect skin colour.

Horn/hoof colour:

Doesn't affect horn or hoof colour.

Mealy is an optional effect of Flaxen

The minimum requirements of Flaxen must still be met regardless if Mealy is shown or not.

Mealy is not listed in the phenotype, a Flaxen with Mealy is still only written as Flaxen.

Appearance

Flaxen can cause a mealy soft gradient effect on the lower legs and/or around the muzzle, in a similar color as the mane and tail.

Mealy should not go above the knees on the legs.

Eye colour:

Doesn't affect eye colour.

Skin colour:

Can optionally lighten the skin in the mealy area.

Horn/hoof colour:

Can optionally lighten the hooves as long as the mealy touches the hoof.

Speckles is an optional effect of Flaxen

The minimum requirements of Flaxen must still be met regardless if Speckles is shown or not.

Speckles is not listed in the phenotype, a Flaxen with Speckles is still only written as Flaxen.

Appearance

Flaxen can have light speckles along the body coat, scattered randomly or arranged in simple patterns. They can be gathered in small clumps similar to flowers, but each individual speckle should still be a somewhat natural-looking spot or smudge.

Speckles will always be the same color as the mane/tail, or a mix between the mane/tail and the body coat. Multiple colours within the speckles are possible, either as gradient or individually coloured speckles.

Eye colour:

Doesn't affect eye colour.

Skin colour:

Can optionally lighten skin where the speckles touches.

Horn/hoof colour:

Can optionally lighten horns/hooves if the speckles touches them.
